About
Dave Sararus
It may seem that Dave Sararus (pronounced: Sir-rare-us) is a late bloomer to singer-song writing, yet nothing happens over night. Sararus’ songs are a product of years of development. Coming of age in the 90’s, where the adage “Think Global, Act Local” came into popularity, Sararus’ life was a combination of local activity with a desire to understand global issues, be it environmental crisis, social- political concerns, or cultural-religious nuances. This led him to be involved in a variety of community musical endeavours: community theatre, various garage bands, and an assortment of choirs. As well, church was a place where he found he could develop his musical and public performance abilities in an encouraging environment.
Through involvement in para-church organizations (i.e. summer camps, relief organizations and social justice agencies) Sararus was met with the challenge of reconciling a mainstream-evangelical stereotype of Christianity with the social justice and peace-building spirituality he was discovering in his particular Christian faith tradition. Much of this struggle is reflected in his song writing… Actually, song writing was one of the main avenues for him to process many of the contradictions/ paradoxes/ misconceptions he found in life.
Yes, Sararus is very much privileged: a white married, Christian, male. He’s the first to acknowledge this; with the realization he has many blind spots he’s not yet aware of. You can hear this acknowledgement between the lines in his songs. This is why he has come forward to share his work with you: to challenge the “normative” narratives; to point to other storylines; to give pause, to listen deeply, and at the same time, to give hope.
Sararus is excited to share his songs with others. He hopes that they will help crack through the surface and allow listeners to place their hands in warm moist soil of the human condition…all with a bit of fun and a chuckle thrown in here and there!
He has composed many songs for use as: theme songs at children day camp settings, meditations in sacred spaces, special events like school concerts, and commissioned milestones.
His repertoire of material has out-paced his ability to finance and record much of the thematic compositions. That said, he has recorded an album, Contradiction Blues, with the mentoring and production of established singer-songwriter and instrumentalist, Doug Tielli. It was digitally released on major streaming services via Indiepool in the Winter of 2022.
